Baseball America Chat Notes

John Manuel of Baseball America conducted a chat yesterday about the Hawaiian Winter League and several former BlueClaws were mentioned. Take a look at the chat transcript, they do a great job. Here’s a small sampling:

Q: What’s your take on Dominic Brown as an up and coming prospect?

John Manuel: Dominic Brown is suring up the prospect charts, if he wasn’t already. He’s athletic, he’s got a chance to to have all five tools, he’s young, and he keeps producing. The Dom Brown trends are up.

Q: How good can Michael Taylor be and who could he be compared to?

John Manuel: He’s going to be in the Phillies top-ten and frankly is a better prospect than John Mayberry Jr. (acquired for Greg Golson last week), who also went to Stanford, also didn’t quite live up to expectations there, and now of course both are Phillies. I like Taylor’s chances to be a power-hitting corner OF in the next couple of years.

Q: Does Kyle Drabek project as a potential #1 starter?

John Manuel: It’s No. 1 stuff. The rest of the package that makes a No. 1 is less tangible, and handing out No. 1 tags is hard. I wouldn’t put that on a guy with such a short track record of success in pro ball. But he definately has No. 1 stuff.

Of the players mentioned, Brown (BlueClaws 2008) hit .389 and won the league’s batting title. Taylor (BlueClaws 2008) hit a pair of home runs with a .244 average, and Drabek (BlueClaws 2007) had a 2.76 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 16.1 innings. Not mentioned in the chat was Chris Kissock (BlueClaws 2008), who had a 1.76 ERA in 22 innings.
