Arizona Fall League Update

Here’s another round of updates, catching you up from last week…Eight Phillies (and seven former BlueClaws) are playing for Scottsdale in the prestigious Arizona Fall League.

Quick notes…

  • Domonic Brown leads the league in doubles with eight
  • Scott Mathieson has not allowed a run in 7.2 innings pitched with 10 strikeouts
  • Think this isn’t a hitter’s league? Phoenix leads the league in ERA at 4.42! The league ERA (all teams combined) is 5.58.

October 24th…Steve Susdorf went 1-4, Domonic Brown 0-2, and Troy Hanzawa 0-4. Hanzawa can only be active by rule one day per week since he is on the taxi squad. Note that Scott Mathieson, coming off a second Tommy John Surgery, threw a shutout inning and hasn’t yet allowed a run this fall.

October 26th…Brown went 2-3 with two walks and Tuffy Gosewisch, getting a rare start since top prospect Buster Posey is on Scottsdale, went 1-3…Michael Schwimer (who skipped Lakewood and ended up with Reading at the end of the year) gave up three earned runs (four total) in 1.2 innings of relief.

October 27th…Domonic Brown went 2-5, raising his average to .319…Mike Cisco started and gave up two unearned runs over three innings and Scott Mathieson continued his strong pitching, not allowing a run over 1.2 innings of relief.

October 28th…Susdorf hit his second home run of the fall, and also walked twice in four plate appearances, while Brown went 0-5…Edgar Garcia (who missed most of the season after having visa problems) allowed four runs (three earned) in two innings of relief.

October 29th…Brown went 0-4 and Gosewisch 1-3 as Scottsdale picked up five hits in a 3-0 loss, their 5th straight.

October 30th…Who says there are no ties in baseball? This one ended 5-5…Brown and Gosewisch combined to go 0-7 and Schwimer threw two shutout innings of relief.

October 31st…Brown, who had been 0-13, went 2-5 with two doubles and drove in three…Susdorf added two hits, Gosewisch was 1-5 and Hanzawa 0-4…Mathieson loaded the bases in the 9th but didn’t allow a run in a 6-0 win, snapping a six game winless streak.

November 2nd…Brown, who ususally hits 3rd, hit 4th here and went 2-4, raising his average back to .271…Cisco started and threw very well, allowing just one run on two hits over 4.2 innings without walking a batter.

November 3rd…Brown got a day off but added a pinch hit double in the 8th inning…Schwimer threw a shutout inning as well…Scottsdale has won just once in their last nine games (1-7-1).
