Arizona Fall League Update

Antoher round of updates on the Phillies prospects and former BlueClaws playing in the Arizona Fall League. First, a few quick notes…

  • All the Phillies prospects are on Scottsdale, who is 10-13 after a 3-3 week. Before that, they had gone 1-8-1 over their previous ten games.
  • Domonic Brown continues to lead the league in doubles with eight (three way tie).

November 4th: Tuffy Gosewisch went 2-4 to raise his average to .345…Scott Mathieson gave up three runs in the 8th inning of a 10-5 loss, the first three runs that he’s allowed this fall…Brown went 0-4.

November 5th: Scottsdale scored 4 in the 8th to come back and beat Surprise, snapping a three game losing streak…Brown went 1-3 with an RBI single…Steve Susdorf was 0-4…Edgar Garcia allowed one run in one inning of relief…The winning runs came in on a Jose Tabata (former Yankees prospect) two run double…Travis d’Arnaud’s brother Chase scored the winning run.

Below the fold the rest of the recaps plus a few notes on some of the other prospects in Arizona:

November 6th: Brown went 0-4 in an 8-4 win over Phoenix…Troy Hanzawa got a start, going 0-3 and scored a run…Michael Schwimer had a 1-2-3 9th inning.

November 7th: The Rising Stars Game…Brown went 1-4 with an RBI double in an 8-7 loss…The East scored seven runs in the first inning but the West came back and won on McBride’s 8th inning home run.

November 9th: Brown went 1-4 in a 3-2 loss to Mesa on Monday…Edgar Garcia gave up a run in the 5th to take the loss…Mathieson bounced back with a 1-2-3 8th inning.

Novmeber 10th: Brown went 1-4 with an RBI in a 2-0 win over Phoenix yesterday…Gosewisch went 0-3 but is still hitting over .300 this Fall.

  • Matt McBride, an Indians prospect who played here with Lake County in 2007, is hitting .389 and had the winning HR in the Rising Stars Game on Saturday.
  • Stephen Strasburg, the top selection in the 2009 draft by the Nationals, is 3-1, 5.28, but a closer look reveals he’s been a little better than that ERA indicates…First, he has a 4.8 to 1 ground out / air out ratio (anything over 2.5 is excellent)…He’s only allowed 14 hits and five walks in 15 innings (with 17 strikeouts). And seven of the nine ER he’s allowed came in one outing (on three home runs).
  • Casey Kelly, Red Sox P/SS prospect, is hitting in Arizona, 4-20. At some point the Red Sox will have to tell him to go pitch full time. He had a sub-2 ERA in his second pro season between Greenville and Hi-A Salem this year, but he wants to be an everyday player. He might make it as a SS but he can be a star pitcher. That was the concensus among those that saw him do both this year too.
  • Carlos Rivero, another Indians prospect who is played here with Lake County, is 20-62.
  • Ike Davis, ranked among the top five Mets prospects by Baseball America, is 21-62 with three home runs.
  • Ian Kennedy (remember him Yankees fans?) is trying to rebound from an anuerysm. He’s allowed nine earned runs on 18 hits in 20.1 innings (19/4 K/BB).
