Fall League Day Three

Good day for the Phillies pitchers in the Arizona Fall League, as two former BlueClaws combined for four shutout innings for Scottsdale in a 9-4 loss to Phoenix…

  • Mike Cisco (2008) made got the start against a lineup that included former Delmarva Shorebirds 1B Brandon Snyder, and Cisco threw two shutout innings. Cisco, drafted last year out of South Carolina, was overshadowed by Vance Worley and Mike Stutes on Reading this year, but pitched pretty well for Reading after going 7-2 for Clearwater.
  • You have to root for Scott Mathieson (BlueClaws 2004), coming off of not one but two Tommy John surgeries, as he tries to push for a big league spot as he did just a few years ago. He allowed just three runs in over 30 innings between GCL, Clearwater and Reading this year, and he also threw two blank yesterday.
  • Domonic Brown again hit third and went 0-2 with 2 walks.

We’ll be trying to set up interviews with the Phillies contingent throughout the Fall League. Of course everything will be posted here.

From the Washington Times

As an experiment, Baltimore prospect Brandon Snyder wore a Stephen Strasburg jersey when he left the clubhouse after an Arizona Fall League game Wednesday night.

Snyder still wore the rest of his Orioles gear – not that it mattered. He could not get to the team bus before being mobbed.

“I thought it was funny until I had about 50 people surrounding me,” he said with a laugh. “Then I didn’t know if it was such a good idea. I got a little nervous after that.”

Funny. Strasburg makes his professional debut tonight with Scottsdale (and the other Phillies prospects). Likely Buster Posey, top Giants prospect, will catch him, but could it be Tuffy Gosewisch?

  1. Dull Says:

What do you make of Harold Garcia hitting .391 and playing for first place Zulia after the first week of play in the Venezuelan Winter League?

  2. Greg Says:

Dull, he’s a good hitter, was all year. Have some positive comments on Harold from a Baseball America writer that we’ll get up here shortly.

There are a few former BlueClaws in that league, Jesus Merchan is 11-24, Kevin Howard is 12-28.

Yoel Hernandez and Freddy Ballestas have started well on the pitching side.
