Knapp…Hamels???

Phillies Minor League pitching coordinator Gorm Heimueller has been in town this week, and he’s gotten to see some very good pitching, but the best start of all was turned in by Jason Knapp on Tuesday morning. Knapp went seven innings and did not allow a run while striking out 14, tying a franchise record.

Heimueller was certainly impressed, telling the Asbury Park Press that Knapp reminds him of a young Hamels.

“But in a different way,” Heimueller said. “Cole did it with a lot of changeups. Jason did it with his fastball and mixed in his other pitchers. I enjoyed watching it.

“He established his fastball, went after the hitters,” Heimueller said. “What I like, he mixes in some good changeups. Second or third time around in the order he threw his curveball. He’s blessed with a great arm. He’ll continue to get better and better.”

Knapp, who leads the league with 30 strikeouts, is 0-2 because the BlueClaws have only scored three runs in his starts. He next pitches on Monday at Delmarva.
