The BlueClaws are set to play their third doubleheader of the season at 6:05 pm today. The first BlueClaws
doubleheader ended with a 2-1 loss and then a rain out game. The second doubleheader ended in a split with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the second game lasted a full nine innings and included a dramatic 6-5 win. Doubleheader games are scheduled for seven innings in the South Atlantic League. The BlueClaws will also play a split day-night doubleheader on June 20th at 1:05 and 7:05 pm.
These days, doubleheaders are the norm, however there are three recorded instances of Major League teams playing tripleheaders…
The Brooklyn Bridegrooms and Pittsburgh Innocents played three on September 1, 1890 (Brooklyn won all three)
Baltimore Orioles and Louisville Colonels on September 7, 1896 (Baltimore won all three)
Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds on October 2, 1920 (Cincinnati won two of the three)
Doubleheader facts:
The Elias Sports Bureau, found that double headers are swept only 26.2% of the time.
Joe “Iron Man” McGinnity of the NY Giants, won both games of a doubleheader three times in the month of August in 1903.
This season, the Kannapolis Intimidators are 9-1 in doubleheaders.
