Maloney Strong in Debut
In his MLB debut, Matt Maloney could not follow in the footsteps of fellow ‘Claws Sergio Escalona and Antonio Bastardo by picking up a win, however, no one will complain with his 6 inning two-run performance. His final line was:
6ip, 6h, 2r, 2er, 1bb,4k
The Reds won the game 4-3 in 11 innings.
With the debut, Maloney became the 29th former BlueClaws player to reach the Major Leagues, and fourth this season so far. Maloney was one of the centerpieces of the team that won the 2006 SAL Championship, setting records for wins (16) and strikeouts (180). A trade sent Maloney to the Reds in 2007 where he flourished this season for Triple-A Louisville, earning the call up. Here is reaction from his start:
“I didn’t feel nervous at all,” Maloney said. “I just went out there and tried to do what I had been doing.”
“I don’t know if it was surprising or not,” Baker said of Maloney’s performance. “I only saw him a couple of times in spring training, so it was hard to make an assessment.”
