Pitching a Gem

Any baseball fan will enjoy this, but on a personal and baseball note…Alex Wimmers, a sophomore at my Alma mater The Ohio State University, threw a nine-inning no-hitter this past weekend against a school simply known as “The State Up North” (Michigan). Wimmers threw a whopping 133 pitches as he recorded 14 strikeouts in the 6-0 win against Michigan. The series between the Buckeyes and the Wolverines dates back to 1895.

This was the first nine-inning no-hitter thrown in Ohio State baseball history. Story and video if you click here… includes a must-see play by shortstop Tyler Engle in the 8th to preserve the no-no. Congratulations Alex.

The last BlueClaws pitcher to throw a no-hitter was on 8/13/2006 when the BlueClaws beat the Lexington Legends 2-1. Carlos Carrasco pitched seven innings, allowing five walks and nine strikeouts and Andy Barb finished the game off, pitching two innings and picking up the save.

These kinds of performances are another reason why baseball is so exciting because on any given night, there can be one of those “I was there” moments.
