Phillies pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater to begin Spring Training 2009 in just seven days. It’s about time. Fitting, in our opinion, that as the baseball folks head south, the weather warms this week up here, 20-25 degrees warmer than it’s been. Baseball is coming folks, soon.

Along those lines, Todd Zolecki, now writing for MLB.com, takes a look at the four-man battle for the Phillies fifth-starter spot, a race which features three former BlueClaws.

• Carlos Carrasco (2006): “Dark horse…but not a stretch to think he would have to blow away the others to win job.”
• JA Happ (2005): “Could have a slight edge…enters Spring Training with a lot of people feeling really good about him.”
• Kyle Kendrick (2004-2006): “Only Moyer and Hamels have won more games than him the last two years.”
• Chan-Ho Park: “He wants to start so badly he is not competing for South Korea in the World Baseball Classic.”
