Phillies, Red Sox, 1915 and Today
As you know, the BlueClaws (Phillies) and Greenville Drive (Red Sox) will play this week in the 2009 South Atlantic League Championship Series. But did you know, the parent clubs met once in the World Series? Yep. 1915.
Boston won the series 4-1 over the Phillies…
- Grover Cleveland Alexander won game one for the Phillies, who subsequently lost the last four games (Alexander also pitched game three).
- Hall of Fame OF Harry Hooper hit two home runs in the clinching game five for Boston.
- Babe Ruth went 18-8 as a pitcher for Boston that year, but only appeared in game one, grounding out as a pinch hitter.
- The Phillies hosted games one, two, and five. But games three and four were not played at Fenway Park (then in its fourth year). They were played at Braves Field, which was able to handle the 42,000 capacity.
While that series was not played at Fenway Park, the 2009 version will take place at Fluor Field, which is modeled after Fenway Park, right down to each nook and cranny, from the Pesky Pole, Williamsburg, the Triangle, and the Green Monster (though in Greenville it is 30-feet high, not 37).
