Phils Happy Brown Chose Baseball

“We had a kid [in Tampa Bay], Carl Crawford. He had signed to play football at the University of Nebraska. He was the same way. Everybody thought, ‘He’s a football player because he signed to play major college football.’ But the minute we got him on a baseball field he showed the feel for the game, the instincts and the ability to adjust. And Dominic has shown all of those skills. I would say he’s more of a baseball player who’s an athlete than a football athlete who’s trying to learn our sport.

“He’s one of those athletes that we lose to other sports.”

That was Phillies Assistant GM Chuck LaMar, talking about Phils outfield prospect, and former BlueClaw, Dominic Brown, who was recently ranked the team’s top prospect by Baseball America.

Here’s a good article in today’s Philadelphia Daily News by Paul Hagen about Brown, who was all set to play football at the University of Miami before the Phillies swooped in.

“A couple my friends were like, ‘Brownie, are you out of your mind?’ But I was like, ‘Man, baseball is what I want to do, you know.’ And then they backed off a little bit,” Brown said with a laugh. “My mom [Rose] said I started hitting off the tee when I was 3 years old. I really don’t know. It’s just baseball that’s been it.”
