Random Thoughts From Game Three

Some random thoughts from game three of the World Series, an 8-5 win for the Yankees, putting them up two games to one in this best of seven with the Yankees.

  • Cole Hamels of the first three innings looked like the Cliff Lee of game one. Then what happened?
  • He threw two curveballs in the first four innings and four on his first 10 pitches of the 5th inning.
  • Is it possible that down by 2-3 runs Charlie Manuel was saving Chan Ho Park for two innings in today’s near must win?
  • Charlie Manuel said he hit Bruntlett in the 6th inning, instead of Francisco, because there were 2 outs and nobody on and he wanted to save Francisco for later. Agree completely. Don’t waste your best RH pinch-hitter there.
  • Sitting in the crowed last night, of course strategy comes up a lot. Have to admit I was wrong on all of it. Uncanny.
  • 1. Would not have started Nick Swisher.
  • 2. Would not have brought JA Happ in to face A-Rod in his first appearance in 12 days.
  • 3. Would have considered double-switching Posada out of the game for the bottom of the 7th when Joba Chamberlain was coming in so you could get two innings out of him.
  • 4. Would have had Joba hit for himself in the top of the 8th and stay in to pitch the bottom of the 8th.
  • Someone in the post-game asked A-Rod if he find the controversy or the controversy finds him.
  • Jayson Werth makes $2.5 million. He’s definitely one of the most underrated players in baseball, and clearly one of the most underpaid. Feels weird to think that he was once platooning with Geoff Jenkins.
  • Last year the Phillies were up 2-1 and faced Andy Sonnanstine. Tonight, down 2-1, against CC Sabathia.
