Michael Dubee’s Strange Week
Today is Michael Dubee’s 24th birthday, and the son of the Phillies pitching coach (Rich), as you may remember, was a BlueClaw in 2007. Today, we thought, would be a great time to look back on what was a strange few weeks for Dubee, involving lockers in both clubhouses at FirstEnergy Park.
Dubee was drafted three times, in 2004 (20th round, White Sox) out of high school, 2005 (32nd round, Royals) and 2006 (18th round, Phillies) out of junior college. He finally signed in 2006, turning down the chance to play at the University of Tennessee. After spending 2006 with Batavia, he was sent to Lakewood for 2007, where he pitched very well (4-4, 3.88).
Then, July 27th, 2007, with Chase Utley banged up and needing a utility infielder, Dubee was traded to the White Sox for Tad Iguch, and sent to Kannapolis.
At the time of the trade, the BlueClaws were in Lexington, but a week later, guess who was coming to town?
In his third appearance with the BlueClaws, Dubee threw four scoreless innings of relief against his former team, allowing just two hits and picking up the win. So within a week of clearing out one locker at FirstEnergy Park, he set up shop in another.
Dubee began 2009 with the White Sox, but ended up with the Pirates, eventually reaching Double-A Altoona, where he went 3-0, 2.91.
He would say that year that the trade was good for him, allowing him to get out from an organization in which his father was (and still is) an established coach, and since the trade, Dubee has pitched very well. This year, he’ll have a chance to reach Triple-A, which puts him one injury away from facing his father’s big league club. Now that would be a story.
