Ruf Promoted, Singleton to Lakewood
Darin Ruf went 5-5 in his last game as a BlueClaw, tying a franchise record for hits in a game (last set by Mike Spidale in 2006, Ruf was the 5th). After the game, Ruf was promoted to Clearwater as part of a first-baseman shuffle around the Phillies minor league clubs.
Ruf, a 20th round pick last year (Creighton) hit .330 with four home runs and 17 RBIs with Lakewood over the first month, and will now head to Florida. We wish him the best.
Singleton, 18, joins the BlueClaws after being picked in the 8th round last year out of Long Beach, California. This is what we wrote on Singleton during the spring, speculating on whether he would open the season with the BlueClaws.
One of the top prospects in the system, Singleton (pictured at right) had an excellent year in his debut in 2009. With the GCL Phillies, he hit .290-2-12, and walked more times (18) than he struck out (13). He originally committed to Long Beach State, and his high school coach in California said the following:
“I think he looks like Ryan Howard reincarnated. He obviously doesn’t put up the same numbers as Howard yet, but they have the same build.”
Here is a Q&A with Singleton from before the 2009 draft.
So Singleton is here, becoming the 10th player on the BlueClaws roster ranked among the top 30 prospects in the organization (he is ranked 20th). Ruf goes to Clearwater. And Matt Rizzotti (BlueClaws, 2008), who hit .352 with Clearwater, is off to Reading.
