Trip Finale

Today is the final game of an eight-game road trip on which the BlueClaws are 4-3. Lakewood sends RHP David Buchanan (4-1, 1.77) to the mound today in Greensboro. The last time Buchanan pitched, Saturday at Charleston, he threw a complete game, six-hitter to beat the RiverDogs 5-1. It was Lakewood’s first complete game since Carlos Monasterios on 7/20/2007 (9-inning complete game).

Here are a few snippets.

Running Claws…The BlueClaws have stolen 40 bases this year (4th in the league), but they have been caught just nine times, which is the second fewest in the league…The BlueClaws have four players with at least five steals: Anthony Hewitt-9, Aaron Altherr-8, Geancarlo Mendez-6, Zach Collier- 6…The BlueClaws stole 212 bases in 2009 (to lead all of Minor League Baseball) and 183 last year.

Quick Hot Streaks…Zach Collier is 7-16 with three doubles over his last four games while Miguel Alvarez is 5-12 in his last three games.

Alone at the Top…With Jim Murphy’s first inning home run on Thursday, he broke a tie with Juan Richardson and moved to the top of the BlueClaws all-time home run list with 23…Murphy had tied Richardson (22) on 5/8 at Charleston…Richardson hit his 22 home runs with Lakewood in 2001, the team’s inaugural season…Murphy hit 14 with the BlueClaws in 2009 and has nine this year…Ryan Howard (19) is in third place on the list.

Closing the Deal…Lakewood is 12-0 when leading after seven innings and 11-0 when leading after eight innings and have not lost one game (10-0) when they carry a lead into the sixth inning this season…RHP Juan Sosa closed Sunday’s win in Charleston…He has three saves this year after having six with Williamsport last year.

The gates will open 90 minutes before the games this weekend (aka 30 minutes early) so fans can watch Hagerstown take batting practice.
