Three Phils in BA’s NYPL Top 20

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Three Williamsport Crosscutters, and two players who spent part of 2009 with the BlueClaws, were ranked among the top 20 prospects in the New York Penn League by Baseball America (see the list here) in a list that came out today. This is the second of the league lists related to the Phillies (GCL here), and we’ll soon see the South Atlantic League, Florida State League, Eastern League, and International League.

4. Sebastian Valle, C: Split the year between Lakewood (.223) and Williamsport (.307-6-40) but really hit the ball well in the Penn League, where he placed from their season opener in June through September 2nd. Valle didn’t turn 19 until July, and when he struggled in Lakewood, he was an 18 year old against older players. Further, with the BlueClaws, he was only catching once or twice a week, not easy. Valle began catching just two years ago. He’ll likely be in Lakewood next year, catching and hitting clean-up on Opening Day.

11. Anthony Hewitt, 3B: The 24th overall pick in the 2008 draft hit .223-7-30 with Williamsport this year, an improvement over the .197 he hit as a rookie in the GCL. He was always considered a project with a ton of ability. We’ll probably see him in Lakewood in 2010. He’s from Brooklyn and played high school ball in Connecticut, so remember he didn’t get to play nearly as much (weather) growing up as a player from say, California. One scout said about Hewitt last year that if he could hit .250 in the big leagues he’d hit 30 home runs. Will be interesting next year.

16. Leandro Castro, OF: Hit .316-7-43 with Williamsport after hitting .155 with Lakewood (he was sent down on Memorial Day). Was 4th in the league in hitting and 2nd in RBIs. Castro is 20, and a solid defensive outfielder who goes gap-to-gap at the plate. Another who began to thrive when he played every day, which is quite significant. We’ll see him in Lakewood to open 2010 as well, one would think.

Baseball America Chat Notes

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

JJ Cooper over at Baseball America recently posted a chat and fielded questions on several Phillies prospects, and former BlueClaws players. You can read the entire chat here, but we’ve taken a few snippets.

Dom Brown or Michael Taylor?
I’d still go with Brown because of the age difference (Brown is two years younger), Brown’s better speed and better defense in right. But it’s nitpicking as both are among the top 25 prospects in baseball.

How good of a prospect is Jason Knapp? Better than Jason Donald or Lou Marson?
That seems very fair. There’s always some hesitation about putting a low Class A arm above guys on the cusp of the big leagues, but Knapp’s ceiling is higher than either Marson or Donald. He could end up being a pretty special arm.

On Anthony Hewitt…
He’s a raw hitter who will need time to figure it out if he ever will. The Phillies knew that when they drafted him, so they will be willing to be patient.

Leandro Castro…

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

In last night’s season opener for Williamsport, Leandro Castro, who was with the BlueClaws through Memorial Day, went 5-6 with a home run hitting second for the Crosscutters. Congrats to Leandro and we wish him luck in Williamsport this year. Castro had 10 hits in 66 at bats with the BlueClaws this season.

Also of note, Anthony Hewitt, Phillies 2008 first-round pick who hit under .200 last year in the GCL, went 1-4 in a 15-2 Crosscutters victory over State College last night.

That was the season opener for Williamsport, and they are now in full gear through Labor Day, like the BlueClaws.

Williamsport Crosscutters Announce Roster

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

The Single-A short season affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, the Williamsport Crosscutters, have announced their opening day roster which will take the field in their first game on June 19th.

Of the current 25-man roster, ten players played for the Crosscutters last season, and BlueClaws manager Dusty Wathan was the manager for the team last season. A number of players throughout the year will play for the Crosscutters and then for the BlueClaws this season.

Of the current roster, Leandro Castro and Esmelvin Jiminez played for the BlueClaws this season and TJ Warren played for the BlueClaws in 2008. The headliner of the roster is the Phillies 2008 first pick Anthony Hewitt (24th overall). He is a higher draft selection than anyone on the Lakewood BlueClaws. The Phillies have sent 11 of their 2009 draft picks to play at Williamsport.

Here is the roster:

Look Who’s Hitting Now

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Spring TrainingJason Donald (BlueClaws 2007) went 3-4 yesterday and is now hitting .320 in spring training, not including a home run against Team USA. He’s 8-25 in nine games and 6 for his last 10.

“He’s swinging good, very good,” Charlie Manuel said of Donald. “He’s been doing a good job. He’s been playing very well defensively and the last two to three days he’s been swinging the bat better.”

“I think subconsciously, I really was trying too hard,” Donald said. “It was in the back of my mind that I felt like I need to produce here, I need to have a positive at-bat, instead of letting the game come to me. Charlie and [hitting coach] Milt [Thompson] talked to me a little bit. It’’s easier said than done, but trust in your abilities at the plate and trust in your approach.”

The Phillies reassigned the following players to minor-league camp: righthander Yorman Bazardo; infielders Ozzie Chavez, Anthony Hewitt and Terry Tiffee; and outfielders Jeremy Slayden (2006) and Chris Walker.

Minor league position players reported to Clearwater yesterday.
