From Nowo: Part Two

Monday, January 25th, 2010

If you missed part one of our ClawCast with Phillies farm director Steve Noworyta, click here. Part two, you can click here. This time, we take a further look at the scouting process, a look at some former BlueClaws from 2009 and some future BlueClaws in 2010. Some snippets:

  • Scouting the sport to prepare for trades…You have your amateur scouts doing high school and college and the pro scouts who are out there specifically for the pro teams and your big league club so when you’re ready to make trades you have reports on these guys.
  • Do you look at amateur scouting reports before a pro trade? Some guys, like (Tyson) Gilles from Seattle, we liked him as an amateur. Marti Wolever really liked him and wished we could have drafted him. But the last year is the most important. Players change over the years.
  • On Jacob Diekman…As big as he is, coming from the side, he’s done a tremendous job.
  • On Austin Hyatt…Just continue to put up the numbers that he’s had everywhere he’s gone.
  • On Neil Sellers (who played for Reading)…He’s constantly putting up the numbers. One of the reasons we got him in the Rule 5 two years ago was he keeps producing. He might be that bat of the bench that you look for. He makes contact, played well in Mexico. He has to keep proving himself, but knowing him, that won’t be a problem.
  • On Sebastian Valle…I think he’s probably better off going to Lakewood to make sure what we saw at the end of the year we see midway through the year. He had a good winter in Mexico, especially with some good power numbers…We say Lakewood now but sometimes those type of players change your mind in spring training.
  • 2010 BlueClaws…Chris Truby did a nice job with the young kids becasue we took a lot of them to Lakewood. They still finished strong. They have some good young talent that Marti (Wolever) has done a nice job bringing together. It’s going to be a competitive club. We have a lot of pitching and good pitching always beats good hitting.

No Rest for the Weary

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Win a championship. Go to Disney World. Well, not quite, but close. It’s off to Clearwater for several members of the 2009 BlueClaws SAL Championship team for the 2009 Florida Instructional League.

  • OF Anthony Gose led all of Minor League Baseball in stolen bases this year with 76 and hit ..407 in the six playoff games. He was voted the league’’s most exciting prospect, best baserunner, and best defensive outfielder by the league’’s managers.
  • 3B Travis Mattair completed his second season with the BlueClaws with an SAL title. Mattair’’s Lakewood teams were 158-118 over two regular seasons and the former 2nd round pick has played more games with Laekwood than anyone in team history.
  • 2B Harold Garcia was voted the league’’s best defensive second baseman and added 42 stolen bases this year while forming a potent 1-2 duo with Gose at the top of Lakewood’’s lineup.
  • C Travis d”Arnaud hit 13 home runs on the season and .305 in the second half as Lakewood’’s lead catcher. d”Arnaud was a former supplemental first-rounder of the Phillies in 2007 and hit .391 in the playoffs.
  • C Sebastian Valle returned to hit 5th for the BlueClaws during the playoffs. He began the year with Lakewood and hit .306 with Williamsport before returning for the playoffs.
  • RHP Trevor May went 4-1 with Lakewood during the regular season and won game two of the division series. He did not allow a run in his last 21 innings and gave up just three in his last 37 on the season.
  • RHP Jesus Sanchez went 9-2 over his last 15 starts and won game two of the Championship Series. Sanchez is a former catcher who was in his first season as a pitcher this year.
  • LHP Matthew Way joined Lakewood in early August and went 4-1 plus he won game one of the Division Series. Way was a 5th round pick this year (Washington State).
  • RHP Heitor Correa joined the BlueClaws in early May and won seven games this year. He developed a back injury and did not appear in a playoff game.
  • RHP Justin De Fratus was an all-star as a reliever in the first half and moved into the rotation in the second half. Overall, he won 5 games with a 3.19 ERA, though he was injured late in the season and did not play in the postseason.
  • LHP Jacob Diekman had an ERA of over 7 in the first half, but after dropping to a sidearm delivery, Diekman pitched to a sub-2 ERA in the second half.
  • RHP Austin Hyatt was drafted in the 15th round this year (Alabama) and threw six shutout innings for Lakewood in the postseason (including the final two). He had a 0.66 ERA with Williamsport before joining Lakewood.

Friday Nuggets and Notes

Friday, September 18th, 2009

First off, here are today’s game notes. What’s been the key to the series? Easy. Hitting with runners in scoring position.

RISP Note: Greenville outhit Lakewood in games one and two, but lost both games, going just 3-19 with RISP…Lakewood lost game three, despite outhitting Greenville, since they went 2-16 with RISP.

–It’s 12:56 pm and it’s pouring here. Rain is supposed to continue all day long. But we’ll see. Everyone still hopeful of playing tonight. If, by the way, the game is postponed tonight, there would be no DH on Saturday, but rather game four on Saturday and game five on Sunday. We would expect that Lakewood would throw Matt Way on Saturday and Jesus Sanchez on Sunday, on normal rest. Greenville will likely keep their rotation as is, but that’s an educated guess. Update: 3:32…still raining…we’re iffy for tonight. No BP today and the bus was pushed from 2:30 to 4:00.

–It’s been 1,099 days since the BlueClaws last won the South Atlantic League title, September 15th, 2006.

–Like in 2006, the BlueClaws won games one and two of the finals, and then lost game three.

–Finally, watch Austin Hyatt. He’s thrown four shutout in the playoffs, and with two days off, we wouldn’t be shocked if Dusty Wathan tries to get maybe even a third inning out of him if needed tonight. Remember, he’s had two days off with one game after tonight, as opposed to this time yesterday, he had one day off after back-to-back with two games to go…Hyatt had a 0.66 ERA over 52 innings with Williamsport before a promotion at the end of the regular season.

Notes and Quotes from Game One

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

crowd-4473Lakewood won game one last night 6-3, now just two wins away from their second SAL title in four years. Some notes and quotes…

  • Anthony Gose’s leadoff HR was his second of the year. His first was also against Greenville, at Fluor Field in July. Gose said “It was a 1-0 fastball and I didn’t miss it.”
  • Dusty Wathan: “Wertz and Diekman came in in big situations. They did a great job going after guys. From then on out it almost seemed easy after Clay (Condrey) got out of his jam. It’s never easy but after we got those two runs in the eighth it really helped us.”
  • The BlueClaws are hitting .337 as a team in the playoffs, and Travis d’Arnaud is 6-11.
  • Harold Garcia hit eight HRs during the regular season (two batting right-handed), but his HR last night was from the right side.
  • Austin Hyatt has two 1-2-3 innings in the playoffs and has a hammer-lock on the eighth inning. His addition has been tremendous.

Game One Wrap

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Quick thoughts on game one of the series with Kannapolis, won by Lakewood 4-2 last night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

  • Matt Way was excellent, again. “Fastballs in, changeups, sliders. I threw just about everything tonight. It worked out well for me,” he said.
  • Anthony Gose was 1-25 coming into last night’s game. No big deal. He went 3-5.
  • The middle of the lineup keeps hitting. Travis d’Arnaud added two more hits, but the top seven in the lineup went 12-29. That will work every night.
  • Left 13 on base and went 2-11 with runners in scoring position. That will have to improve.
  • Austin Hyatt, an easy 1-2-3 8th inning. Between Hyatt and Santo Hernandez, Lakewood has the last nine outs of any game locked down (they got six out of the pen last night).
  • Biggest at bat of the game: Harold Garcia’s 8th inning SAC fly: he had foul off 3 different 0-2 pitches before the fly ball, making it 4-1 Lakewood. That run was huge as Hernandez labored in the 9th.
