Ryan Howard Jersey Retirement: September 2nd

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

howard-jersey-200200Here is the breaking news we promised…on September 2nd, the BlueClaws will be retiring Ryan Howard’s number 29 here in Lakewood. Some notes about the event…

  • Ryan will be here. The Phillies play in LA on September 1st, are off on the 2nd, and home on the 3rd.
  • The first 2,000 fans will receive a Ryan Howard commemorative mini-BlueClaws jersey.
  • His number 29 will be the third retired by the BlueClaws (50 for longtime South Atlantic League President John Henry Moss and 42 for Jackie Robinson), but first for any former BlueClaw.
  • Howard was the first (by two days over Gavin Floyd) former BlueClaw to appear in a major league game (on September 1, 2004).
  • Here is an MiLB.com article on Howard’s 2007 rehab appearance with the BlueClaws.

“Ryan has gone from being a great BlueClaw to being one of the best players in all of baseball,” said BlueClaws General Manager Geoff Brown. “We’re proud to honor him like this and are excited to bring him back to Lakewood.”

Another Hall of Famer

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

That’s all we do here, bring in Hall of Famers. Last night, for those of you that missed WWE’s Monday Night Raw, Ted DiBiase, the Million Dollar Man, was announced as a part of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2010. He will be inducted at Wrestlemania (March 27th in Phoenix).

BlueClaws connection: The Million Dollar Man will be joining us here at FirstEnergy Park on June 19th for a special autograph signing.

Of course, as we’ve noted here before, Andre Dawson, who will be inducted this summer into the Baseball Hall of Fame, will also be joining us here at FirstEnergy Park. That’s 2-2. Anyone else looking to make their Hall of Fame? Give us a ring.

Hall of Fame tally…on the baseball side, we’ve brought in the following: Steve Carlton, Bob Feller, Goose Gossage, Jim Rice.

And on the wrestling side, the following Hall of Famers have been at BlueClaws games: Sgt Slaughter, George “The Animal” Steele, and now the Million Dollar Man.

Enjoy the Million Dollar Man theme song:

Build a Bushel…

The BlueClaws have released a bunch of the 2010 promo nights so far (click here) with many more still to come leading into Opening Day…Thought this would be a good time to take a shot on building my own Bushel of BlueClaws ticket package, selecting seven games of my choosing. For no reason, here you go…

  2. May 8th: Bark in the Park (bring your dog to the game, photos here)

  4. July 1st: Andre Dawson autograph signing
  5. July 3rd: Jumbo fireworks for 4th of July (team is away on the 4th)
  6. July 22nd: Dusty Wathan SAL Championship Bobblehead Doll

Sunday Links and Coffee

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

sausage_links.jpgBack for another Sunday links and coffee post, a look around the baseball world for you while you have that java on the 20-degree morning awaiting the football games.

  • We noted Andre Dawson’s appearance here last week. The newly elected Hall of Famer will be in Lakewood on July 1st, 24 days before his induction in Cooperstown.
  • Ben Hill of MiLB.com writes a story here on Dawson’s minor league experience (albeit short lived) here.
  • Ben also has a cool ideaMay I suggest that teams stage a series of autograph signings entitled “You Will Not Be Forgotten”? The guests of honor would be those who fell off the Hall of Fame ballot in their first year of eligbility (this year, that illustrious group consists of Andres Galarraga, Robin Ventura, Eliis Burks, Eric Karros, Kevin Appier, Pat Hentgen, David Segui, Mike Jackson, Ray Lankford, Shaun Reynolds, and Todd Zeile).
  • What is a Hall of Fame appearance worth financially? Bill Madden answers.
  • Matt Gelb in the Inquirer attempts to answer some pitching questions the Phillies still have to answer six weeks before pitchers and catchers.
  • Brett Myers is now an Astro, re-united with Ed Wade.
  • Jon Heyman has some thoughts on remaining free agents.

Andre Dawson Elected…& Is On His Way to Lakewood!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

dawsonhofAndre Dawson, who we talked about here, has been elected to the Hall of Fame, and 24 days before his July 25th Cooperstown induction, he’ll be in Lakewood signing autographs for BlueClaws fans!

He received 77.9% of the vote (needing 75% for induction) to make it on his ninth try.

As we mentioned earlier, only Willie Mays, Barry Bonds, and Dawson have 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases. Plus, Dawson won eight Gold Glove Awards.

Dawson becomes the fifth Hall of Famer to sign autographs at a BlueClaws game, joining Steve Carlton, Bob Feller, Goose Gossage, and Jim Rice.

On a sad note for us (see here), Bert Blyleven missed by four votes (out of 540). But, he should be a lock to get elected next year. No player who has received 70% of the vote has ever missed out on the Hall of Fame.

But congrats to Andre Dawson, and we’ll see him on July 1st.
