ClawCast with BlueClaws Hitting Coach Greg Legg

Monday, July 27th, 2009

With the BlueClaws averaging more than six runs per game over the last three weeks, we thought it’d be time to sit down with hitting coach Greg Legg. Some nuggets…

  • “Hitting is contagious. One guy gets hot. The other guy says, ‘If he can do it, I can do it.’ They’re all getting better at whatever their weaknesses were.”
  • “We told d’Arnaud that if he weren’t hitting, we’d move him out of the three hole. He’s the best hitter we’ve got. His approach has been simpler at the plate and he’s barreling up some balls…He’s got great hands, unbelievable hands and wrists…He’s hit the ball hard all year.”
  • “Gose has really come on the last two months. Garcia’s been ‘Steady Eddie’” for us.”
  • “We wanted to let both Garcia and Gose have both slots [1 and 2]. They both might hit in either slot in the big leagues. It’s a difference in scenery and we want to keep the agressiveness in both hitters. We’re letting them both get the feel of the positions.”
  • On D’Arby Myers: “We’re keeping it real simple. We want to keep him square at the plate and not fly open with his lower or upper half. We also try to take away right field and hit the ball up the middle.”

No D’Arby About It

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Talk about a few good days…D’Arby Myers had three more hits last night (single, double, triple) and is 8-12 in the first three-games of this series in Asheville. D’Arby is 10-16 with six runs scored in his last four games and since June 1st is hitting a cool .345, raising his average from .209 to .274.

The light seems to have clicked on for Myers, and with Zach Collier now in Williamsport, there will be a lot more playing time available for Myers in the outfield. If he keeps hitting, he’ll certainly keep playing.

Game 92: BlueClaws (54-37) vs Lexington (46-46)

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Welcome to FirstEnergy Park for tonight’s game between the BlueClaws and Legends…the clubs have split the first two of this four-game series…game notes hereaudio here (at 4:50).

LWD: RHP Heitor Correa (6-6, 3.56)
LEX: RHP Jordan Lyles (5-7, 2.92)

On Correa…He had thrown 6 shutout two-back at Kannapolis but gave up four in the seventh without getting an out. Then last time, he gave up six in just 4.2 against Bowling Green. His ERA has risen from 2.82 to 3.56 over those two outings.

On Lyles…The #6 prospect in the Houston system, he had a chance to play football at South Carolina but signed with the Astros the day he graduated high school. They skipped him last time so he hasn’t pitched since 7/7. Like Jason Knapp, he is 18 and is striking hitters out like it’s going out of style (118 in 95.2 innings).

3:03: Weather is perfect. Watching JA Happ and the Phils on the big screen right now.

First Half Recap: We are the Champions

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

The 2009 Lakewood BlueClaws opened their season on April 9th on a beautiful night for baseball with a beautiful sight on hand. The BlueClaws welcomed the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies World Series Trophy to FirstEnergy Park for pre-game festivities, with the 25-man BlueClaws roster hoping to attain glory of their own in the first half of the season; they would.

Despite losing the game 2-1, Tyler Cloyd pitched six innings, allowing two runs and displaying the stuff that would make him the ace of the team’s starting rotation by mid season. Anthony Gose also stole his first base of the season, 43 more to follow in the first half, just 15 shy of the single season record, and the bullpen pitched three shutout innings, dominance on their part became instrumental.

Then, on April 11th, after a 0-2 start, D’Arby Myers came to the plate in a tie ballgame, with a runner on third in the bottom of the 11th inning and his single to center field was the first win for the BlueClaws this season, and they would become a team with a flair for the dramatics, earning the nickname the ‘Cardiac Claws’.
