Welcome back to another edition of Sunday Links and Coffee, a series of links to stories from around the baseball world to enjoy with your Sunday coffee. We start in Clearwater:
- Andy Martino in the Inquirer has a lengthy piece on Cole Hamels that covers a lot of ground…from his new role as a father, the World Series, 2010, statistics, and more. Good read.
- Paul Hagen in the Daily News on 47-year old Jamie Moyer trying to win the 5th starter’s job after a shaky season last year.
- From Friday, Andy Martino on the start of the Halladay/Hamels era.
- Scott Lauber in the Delaware News-Journal on former BlueClaw Freddy Galvis, who flashed some leather yesterday in Bradenton. Said Asst. GM Chuck LaMar: “He has such good feet and such good hands. Not an outstanding arm — Jimmy Rollins has an outstanding arm — but he plays the hitter so well and has such good instincts in the middle infield. He’s one of those young guys that can make an acrobatic play.”
- Good note in the last article on Galvis: he was just the 11th teenager in the 43 years of baseball in Reading.
And from around baseball:
- Mike Lupica in the NY Daily News on Jose Reyes, his thyroid problem, and the Mets.
- Bill Madden, also in the NY Daily News, on Bobby Cox beginning his final season as Braves manager…Cox at one time was a manager in the Yankee system:“When I was at Syracuse, George would call me all the time,” Cox related. “We had to phone in our reports after every game and George listened to all of them. He’d call me and start screaming, ‘What the hell is wrong with (Terry) Whitfield (a top Yankee outfield prospect at the time)? Why isn’t he hitting?’
“Another year, they wanted me to make a second baseman out of our top prospect Otto Velez, even though he was an outfielder. Yeah, I had my share of confrontations with George. Who knows what would’ve happened if I hadn’t gotten hired by the Braves after ‘77? It just wasn’t meant to be.”
- Interesting article from ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick: a series of umpire errors during the post-season forced a shake-up of umpire supervisors for this season.

Yesterday was a great day for several former BlueClaws, as the Phillies announced that 13 players have earned non-roster invitations to spring training, which opens in a few weeks. (with Lakewood)
- Domonic Brown (2008)…the organization’s top prospect, who spent last year in Clearwater and Reading. The Phillies would not, and did not, trade him in the Halladay deal.
- Freddy Galvis (2008)…fielding wizard hit .247 with Clearwater last year before finishing the season with Reading.
- Tuffy Gosewisch (2007)…catcher finished up his 3rd Arizona Fall League appearance this year, and while he wasn’t added to the 40-man roster, he will get to go to big league camp. Read our Q&A with Gosewisch here.
- BJ Rosenberg (2009, pictured)…best closer in the SAL this year and he accomplished the rare feat of skipping Clearwater, after an August promotion straight to Reading, where he finished the season. He had a 28.1 consecutive scoreless inning streak with the BlueClaws to end his tenure here.
Quintin Berry (2007) and Jesus Sanchez (2009) will also get to go to big league camp, as they were added to the 40-man roster in November, along with Yohan Flande.
Other non-roster invitees include former first-round pick Joe Savery, plus Phillipe Aumont and Tyson Gilles who came over from Seattle in the Cliff Lee trade (read our Q&A with Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times here).

It’s that time of year, prospect season. Baseball America releases their top ten Phillies prospects on Monday and we’ll have everything covered right here on BlueClaws Blog. Later this weekend, we will give you our picks, but first, let’s look back at a survey the Reading Eagle did at the end of the minor league season.
They asked members of the media and team broadcasters who cover the organization’s minor league clubs to rank, 1-20, members of the Phillies pharm system.
Here’s how the rankings came out (our comments)
- 1. Kyle Drabek, P, off TJ surgery, jumped from Clearwater to Reading easily
- 2. Michael Taylor, OF, has hit at four different levels since Lakewood early 08
- 3. Domonic Brown, OF, just turned 22, playing well in AFL
- 4. Anthony Gose, OF, speedster led MiLB in stolen bases w/ 76
- 5. Travis d’Arnaud, C, had great 2nd half after struggling in first half, top catcher in system after trade of Lou Marson
- 6. Mike Stutes, P, he and Worley first in 10 years to open first full season in Reading
- 7. Freddy Galvis, SS, slick fielder got taste of Double-A at end of season
- 8. Antonio Bastardo, P, became 30th former BlueClaw to reach bigs this year, active for all three rounds of playoffs
- 9. BJ Rosenberg, P, unknown at beginning of the year, he double-jumped to Reading
- 10. Joe Savery, P, former 1st round pick won 15 games between Reading and Lehigh Valley
- (continued below)

Baseball America continues to rank prospects by league and today’s list dealt with the Florida State League. Three former BlueClaws were on the list, which you can see in full here.
3. Domonic Brown, OF: It raised some eyebrows when Baseball America had him #1 in the Phillies system at the beginning of the year, but not now. He had a great year, hitting .301-11-44 and acquitting himself well (.279-3-20) in 37 games with Reading. He just turned 22 in September and might well be ready for Lehigh Valley when the 2010 season opens. Like the man behind him and Michael Taylor (who will be at or near the top of the Eastern League list), he’s probably among the top 25 or 30 prospects in all of baseball. Was a BlueClaw for the duration of 2008.
5. Kyle Drabek, RHP: Recovering from Tommy John surgery always raises questions, but Drabek answered them all with ease this year. He had a 2.48 ERA and 10.8 Ks/9 with Clearwater and 8-2, 3.64, with 7.8 Ks/9 with Reading. Drabek made the Futures Game this year, was shut down at the end of the year, and didn’t pitch in the Reading post-season. But the year was a smashing success for the 21 year old, who will likely debut at some point in 2010. He was with Lakewood in 2007.
19. Freddy Galvis, SS: He was one of the youngest regulars in the SAL last year, and the 19 year old was one of the youngest in the FSL this year, where he hit .247, up nine points from his BlueClaws season in 2008. The slick fielder hit his first home run with Reading in his first game with the club, where he played briefly at the end of the season. He can field, the question is how fast the bat will come around. But he is a special defensive player. Next year will be interesting for Galvis, playing every day in one of the toughest leagues in the game at just 20 years old, but it won’t be something he hasn’t gone through before.
Previously: South Atlantic League, NY-Penn League, Gulf Cost League

That would be the Philadelphia Inquirer. Jim Salisbury had a great article last week (click here) about the Phillies new and improved minor league system. The article mentions a number of former BlueClaws, highlighted by Michael Taylor.
“Even with as good a year as he had in A ball [in 2008], I don’t think anyone could have predicted what he did in the Eastern League this year,” assistant GM Chuck LaMar said. “He tore it up. We’ve always thought of him as a major-league prospect, but he sped his clock toward Philadelphia.”
Others mentioned include OF Domonic Brown, SS Freddy Galvis, C Travis d’Arnaud, C Sebastian Valle, RHP BJ Rosenberg, RHP Trevor May (”could emerge as a front-line starter), and RHP Jesus Sanchez.
Worth a full read.

Greg Giombarrese caught up with several of the SAL Champions after the game, here is a quote from each and a link to hear the entire podcast, enjoy:
Starting Pitcher Korey Noles:
On pitching in front of his family and friends:
“It means a lot, having all this support and all the people behind just really helps you to get over that hump and really dig deep”
Link here.
BlueClaws Hitting Coach Greg Legg:
On seeing the ball hit for the final out:
“All year long, even through spring training, I told the guys that Harold Garcia was my favorite player…because he played second and so did I, so when the ball was hit to him I yelled ‘It’s my favorite player!’ it’s euphoria, and I think its the journey that makes it worth while…”
Link here.
BlueClaws Third Baseman Travis Mattair:
On seeing the final out:
“I started jumping around, I was so excited that’s the moment you’ve been working for the whole season. One-hundred and forty games plus the playoffs, that’s what you grind for throughout the season to get to that moment and when it happened it was kind of surreal, but it’s a great feeling and such a great group of guys and I’m so thrilled to be a part of this team.”

BlueClaws Outfielder Anthony Gose and Catcher Travis d’Arnaud:
“It was one of the best feelings in the world” - d’Arnaud “This was my first time being part of a championship team and it was amazing.” - Gose
