A BlueClaws Thanksgiving

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Certainly the 2009 baseball season was a a special one for BlueClaws fans, seeing the home team win a second SAL title, and a month later seeing some former BlueClaws on the Phillies World Series roster. So for Thanksgiving, we decided to list a few highlights for us, moments that we were thankful we got to see during the 2009 baseball season at the Jersey Shore.

  • Anthony Gose spending about $600 of his own money bidding on BlueClaws red jerseys during our live auction for the American Cancer Society
  • The spirited bidding war over Jim Murphy’s pink jersey on Mother’s Day, with the winner being the Susan G. Komen Foundation
  • Brendan Akashian hitting his first (and only) affiliated baseball home run with his father in attendance on Father’s Day at FirstEnergy Park
  • Jason Knapp in a complete zone, striking out 14 Lake County Captains over seven shutout innings to tie Robinson Tejeda’s franchise record, though the BlueClaws would lose the April 21st game 2-0
  • Seeing hitting coach Greg Legg win his first minor league championship in 27(!) years in the organization
  • A special day in BlueClaws history: August 24th, 2009…not only does Brett Myers do a rehab appearance during a BlueClaws double-header against Lake County, but between games, Matthew Currie (age 7) of Toms River becomes the 4-millionth fan in BlueClaws history
  • 27 straight scoreless innings by reliever BJ Rosenberg before a deserved promotion to Reading
  • Pedro Martinez
  • The Cha-Cha Claws (see below)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

OceanFirst’s Home Runs for Heroes Final Tally

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

homerunsforheroes2Wednesday at FirstEnergy Park, we’ll have a special check presentation ceremony from OceanFirst Foundation as we wrap up year one of Home Runs for Heroes, a unique program which tied local military-based charities to home runs from BlueClaws players.

Every time a BlueClaws player hit a home run at FirstEnergy Park this year, OceanFirst Foundation made a donation of $1,000 to a local military-based non-profit. Final donation tallies below:

Position Organization Amount
C Catholic Charities, Trenton Diocese $3,000
1B American Recreational Military Services $9,000
2B VetGroup $2,000
3B Navy/Marine Relief Society - Earle $2,000
SS Navy/Marine Relief Society - Lakehurst $1,000
LF Army Emergency Relief - Fort Monmouth $3,000
CF National Guard Family Readiness Council $1,000
RF American Red Cross $1,000
DH Army Emergency Relief - Fort Dix $2,000

ARMS thanks Jim Murphy for hitting seven home runs at home this year and propelling them to the win. Their other two home runs were off the bat of Jeremy Hamilton.

Snippets From Dusty

Monday, October 5th, 2009

We spoke with BlueClaws manager Dusty Wathan last week for a multi-part end-of-year wrap up piece which will debut soon. Here are some highlights:

  • When he realized he had a team that could win: It was probably not until after the first month, about 30 games in, and we were still in the mix. That’s when the guys came together too.
  • The team’s league-best road record: Sometimes in lower levels it’s easier to play on the road. A lot of guys are counting on other guys to get them to the ballpark and it’s harder to get into a routine.
  • The bullpen in the first half: It was huge because the starting pitching didn’t have their pitch counts as high as they would be. It we could get five or six from the starter, we would lock it up. To have four guys back there it was amazing. Every night we had two guys available.
  • First, not second: A lot of people forget who was here in the first half. Tyler Cloyd, Jon Velasquez, Jason Knapp…It’s tough in a league where the halves are split because you tend to forget who got you to the playoffs. Velasquez and Cloyd especially got a lot of Ws. Knapp pitched well but we couldn’t get him any runs.
  • Jesus Sanchez: [Delmarva manager] Orlando Gomez said he couldn’t believe how far Sanchez had come since that first weekend [when he lasted 2/3 of an inning on Easter]. Nobody could believe he was catching last year.
  • Travis d’Arnaud’s second half: When a catcher struggles at the plate, sometimes they take it on the field, but he never did that in the entire first half. And he was outstanding in the second half.
  • Anthony Gose: His personality definately helps. He doesn’t let things worry him. He’s never in a bad mood or worried about yesterday. You don’t know if he went 0-4 or 4-4 yesterday, or even after the game. He’s a team leader and guys listen to him. To do that at 18, that’s pretty special.
  • What Dusty learned this year: The biggest thing was getting a feel about the players. Players are talented and they have ability to have success at the minor league level. You can lead them in the right direction, but you can’t hit, you can’t pitch. You prepare as well as you can, and hopefully they can go out there and do it. This group did that easily. Also, use your coaches, and we had great coaches.
  • Korey Noles, winner in the clincher: He pitched last year, but didn’t make a team out of spring training, but stayed in extended at his age, started in GCL, went to Williamsport, and it paid off for him.
  • Top of the lineup: If Harold Garcia were on a different team, you would hear a lot more about Harold Garcia…Without Gose, he’s right there on the front page of everything.
  • Heading into the playoffs: I thought we had as good an opportunity as everyone else. When I saw game one in Kannapolis, I felt we had a pretty good chance. With all those close games we had throughout the season, playing in a playoff atmosphere in the first half, our players thought they could win it. When they believe they can do something, especially Gose, d’Arnaud and Garcia, watch out because they’re going to do it.

Post-Season Media Guide

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Here we are, the morning of the first playoff game. Click here for the BlueClaws Post-Season Media Guide, featuring some notes, quotes, nuggets, player statistics, bios, and more. A couple of quick notes from here…

  • The BlueClaws have now had a winning record in eight straight halves (dating to the first half of the 2006 championship season)
  • No team stole more bases this year (210) than the Lakewood BlueClaws. That’s of 120 full-season Minor League Baseball teams

Some quotes of note:

  • Dusty Wathan on Travis d’Arnaud (who hit .302 in the second half)…He’s driving balls the other way and thinking double instead of home run. He just needs to stay within himself, and when he does, he’ll have a lot of success.
  • Game One Starter Matthew Way…I wanted to establish myself as one of the better starters here, and being named the game one starter was one of the goals I set for myself and one of the things I wanted to do when I got here.

On the series with Kannapolis (6-6)

  • Tonight’s starter for KAN, Charlie Leesman, took a perfect game to two outs in the eighth in May against Lakewood, his lone start against the BlueClaws this season.
  • Anthony Gose is 5-35 against Kannapolis this year.
  • KAN 2B Drew Garcia is 17-51 with a home run off Lakewood.

ClawCast: Jim Murphy

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

jimmurphySat down with BlueClaws first baseman Jim Murphy in advance of the upcoming BlueClaws post-season next week (click here to listen)…The interview took place before the game on Friday night, in which he went 4-4 with a walk…Murph, as of now, has five RBI doubles in his last four games! Some snippets…

  • How he feels at the plate: “Feel pretty good…I had a rough stretch there at the end of July and into early August, but I’ve been swinging the bat a lot better. Average hasn’t gone up but I’m having overall better at bats and it’s starting to show.”
  • Working on with Greg Legg: “Consistent balance position. When I’m struggling I lunge a lot and don’t wait. So I want to get a solid base before starting my swing.”
  • First base vs DH: “I prefer playing first…I stay more involved in the game…This prevents you from over-thinking.”
  • His college teammate Matt Way: “I obviously had no idea where he was going in the draft. It’s pretty cool being able to play with Way again. He’s a good pitcher and a good buddy.”
  • On Way: “If you’re left-handed with a change-up in this league, you have a chance to be real good.”
  • Way hit him: “Our rule in college was stand in there and wear it no matter what. So he would come inside. It’s probably why I get hit with so many pitches now. It’s ingrained in me.”
  • The playoffs: “I’ve never had a playoff type atmosphere, never done it in college. I’m looking forward to it.”
