Q&A: Justin De Fratus

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

defratusWe had a chance to talk to 2009 BlueClaws pitcher Justin De Fratus earlier this week. De Fratus went 5-6, 3.19 with the BlueClaws this year, spending the first-half in the bullpen and second-half in the starting rotation. He turned 22 in October and is likely headed to Clearwater with manager Dusty Wathan and many of his BlueClaws teammates next year.

  • How do you feel after the oblique injury (which ended his season a week before the playoffs)…I feel great. I’ve done a lot of ab workouts, focusing on the injury to make sure it never happens again.
  • Watching the playoffs after you’d been such a key contributor all season…I wanted to be out there but at the same time you have to understand a career is bigger than a Single-A Championship…Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to win badly, and we did. It would have been harder if we didn’t win, but we did. It showed me how good, how deep that team was.
  • Off-season workout plan…I got home from Instructional League on October 3rd and still wanted to give my oblique some time, so I really started getting it going in the second week of November, when I started doing my running and workouts. I’ve thrown a few times but haven’t gotten too crazy with that. I will soon, after the start of the new year.
  • Starter or reliever…They haven’t told me either way. I think I’ve had success at both, and I don’t care to be honest. I just want to play in the big leagues. Whatever is going to get me to the big leagues faster is fine with me.
  • What did you think of the Halladay trade?…I didn’t think about it from an opportunity standpoint, but to me I lost two friends, especially d’Arnaud. He was with me every step of the way, from GCL to Williamsport to Lakewood. That was the toughest part for me, losing Travis. I’ll run into him again, and the game goes on. I’ll just do what I can do. Hopefully it works out.
  • If you face d’Arnaud, do you know how to get him out?…No. He owns me. I think he’s 3-3 off me, hit one off my hand, one off the wall, and a laser past the shortstop. We’ll see.
  • Plans for 2010, obviously likely Clearwater to start…The Phillies haven’t pointed me in the wrong direction at all. I’m going to trust what they want to do. If they feel a full year at Clearwater is what I need, then great. They’ll do the right thing by me and the organization.
  • Your championship ring…That’s going to be sweet. I’ll have that one on all the time.

More BlueClaws Transactions

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

The BlueClaws made a couple of moves after the game on Wednesday night, a 4-2 loss to Hagerstown; these additional moves come as Lakewood needed to put two guys on the DL before the playoffs begin next week…as follows:

  • RHP Justin De Fratus placed on DL (left oblique strain)…De Fratus got just four outs before getting hurt on Monday. He was 5-6, 3.19 with Lakewood this year and was rolling along as a starter, having allowed just three ER in his last 21.1 IP.
  • RHP Heitor Correa placed on DL (lower back strain)…Correa was 7-8, 4.13 with Lakewood this year, and joined the BlueClaws on May 3rd.
  • RHP Luke Wertz tranferred from Williamsport…a 13th rd pick in 2007 (U of Nebraska), Wertz was 2-1, 2.18 with Williamsport and has allowed just two earned runs in his last 17.2 innings pitched.
  • C Sebastian Valle transferred from Williamsport…Valle was hitting .312-6-40 with Williamsport…He turned 19 in July and has played great since getting in the lineup every day. He played a few days a week early in the year with the BlueClaws and went .220-1-15 in the first half.

Analysis: The De Fratus loss especially big. Austin Hyatt, who had a sub-one ERA with W’Port is here, but now he replaces De Fratus instead of complementing him.

More on this Thursday from Delmarva.

ClawCast: Phillies Minor League Pitching Coordinator Gorm Heimueller

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Sat down with Phillies minor league pitching coordinator Gorm Heimueller (listen here) on Monday at FirstEnergy Park, and we got into a few different topics which we’ll bring here soon, but first, some of Gorm’s comments on pitchers around the system:

  • On Justin De Fratus: “With the guys we had coming up from the draft last year, we felt he would be a better fit in the bullpen, and he did a fantastic job, his velocity went up in the pen. But we felt that in order for him to really improve his secondary pitches, we felt he would benefit from the extra innings as well as the side work.”
  • On Jesus Sanchez: “He’s not only a hard worker but he’s very smart. He picks up stuff.  A lot of it has been fastball change-up, he needs to improve on his breaking ball, he knows that. From a year ago, his improvement has been great to see.”
  • On Matthew Way: “He’s a little more polished than a high school guy would be. He’s a lefty that relies on a changeup. But for me at times it’s a screwball. It’s effective against righties and lefties. He gets a lot of swings and misses on balls in the dirt.”
  • On Trevor May: “Size 17 shoe for one. He’s still growing into his body…He missed a few weeks with a back injury in spring training. He’s got a heavy fastball, 91-93.”

There’s more in there. Enjoy.

State of the ‘Claws with Dusty Wathan

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

New podcast posted with BlueClaws manager Dusty Wathan (listen here) on the State of the BlueClaws…Right now that state is doing pretty well (65-47) and Lakewood has won the first two games of this road trip.

  • Last homestand: “I didn’t think we put the effort into it. We had a good meeting and now it’s been all positive.”
  • On Trevor May: “It’s exciting to see him come here instead of going to Williamsport…The club’s real high on him…He’s a hard worker and a nice guy to have on the team.”
  • On Justin De Fratus: “He had to change his mentality from being ready every night to now where he’s got 100 pitches. It’s hard to be sharp every night if you’re not used to it. He got back into his routine and running program. It’s a lot different.”
  • Getting Harold Garcia back: “He brings enthusiasm, another threat to run. If he or Gose gets on, it helps out the guys hitting behind him. It probably was good for him to get a little break, a little breather.”
  • On Travis d’Arnaud: “I think for the most part he’s done it himself, kept his head up the whole time. He was hitting balls hard and now he gets a 16-hoppers through the left side and suddenly he’s up close to .250. He’s not a .220 hitter and he’s one of our best hitters.”

There’s more in there (Jacob Diekman, D’Arby Myers, post-season).
