Opening Day Festivities

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

“You look forward to it like a birthday party when you’re a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.” That’s what Joe DiMaggio said about Opening Day. Thursday night in Lakewood is our Opening Day. The game starts at 6:35, but that’s almost secondary to whatever else will be going on that day.

Here are some of the pre-game festivities that we’ll have.

  • Ceremonial Opening of the Gates: We open the season with an opening of the gates at 5:30. BlueClaws players will be there to greet and interact with fans prior to the start of the season’s first home game.
  • Player Intros: We’ll have full introductions for both teams prior to the game. Players will be called out to line up along each line, reserves, coaches, and starters.
  • National Anthem: Obviously this is not exclusive to Opening Day, but the great Evolution will be singing the anthem.
  • Flyover: This is exclusive to Opening Day – a flyover thanks to the 108th Air Refueling Wing of the NJ Air National Guard out of McGuire Air Force Base, under the command of Wing Commander Colonel Kevin Keehn.
  • Ceremonial First Pour: In the Coors Light WRAT Trap with representatives from Shore Point Distributing and 95.9 WRAT.

You never want to miss Opening Day. Tickets here.

Belmont Preview on Thursday

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

I’m sitting here in Greensboro watching live races at Monmouth Park and looking at some of the horses that will be running in next Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, including both the Derby winner Animal Kingdom and the Preakness winner Shackelford.

I was reminded that the BlueClaws will be “previewing” the Belmont on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park (a Thirsty Thursday, mind you).

Here is the stretch photo of the Preakness preview, with Mucho Macho Man running away to a win, from May 16th. Click the picture to enlarge and then scroll down for notes.

blueclawspreakness

As you can see, we have circled three things. On the left, you can clearly see an anonymous Hagerstown reliever having thrown a cup of water onto the face of the leading horse. He has just been soaked and you can see that from the middle circle. Also, note some of the water having splashed up into the air (over the dirt below the word “Natural” in New Jersey Natural Gas). The third circle is of the second place horse Flashpoint, who even though he is being annihilated in the race, is amused by this water throwing incident.

I almost circled the kid with the blanket, because it was May 16th. But to be fair the game time temperature that day was 64 degrees and this was probably an hour or so after that. Take it for what that’s worth.

Who’s running in the Belmont?

On a more serious Thirsty Thursday note, you’ll be able to win tickets this week to see Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow at PNC Bank Arts Center (win tix at Thirsty Thursday, show is on July 12th). Sing along.

We posted the WRAT Trap entertainment schedule on BlueClaws.com today (click here). We start on Friday night with the Fish Tank Mafia (see below).

There will be drink specials as well.

Each band will perform beginning one hour before the game up until the National Anthem.

Three Weeks Until Opener / Raise the Banner

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

openingdayfullAs I type this, we’re just short of 7 pm on Thursday (St. Patrick’s Day), which means in three weeks exactly, we’ll be underway at FirstEnergy Park in game one of the 2011 season.

We’ll probably be in the second inning, unless of course we get a repeat of 2007′s Opening Day.

Anyway, we’re once again giving fans the opportunity to raise the South Atlantic League Championship Banner. Fans can bid on eBay by clicking here and all proceeds from the auction will benefit BlueClaws Charities.

Opening Day is also a Thirsty Thursday, which is cool. It’s the first time we’ve opened on a Thirsty Thursday since we instituted the promotion.

On that note, click here to become a fan of Thirsty Thursday on Facebook and like our first post to show how psyched you are for the first Thirsty Thursday of 2011.

Here is info on the Thirsty Thursday Club, which includes a free mug and a bunch more. Do you bring friends out to Thirsty Thursday? Then the club is perfect since you can use all the tickets in two or three games and keep the mug.

Enjoy the games tonight.

Jack Morris to Sign Autographs on July 7th

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

The BlueClaws on Wednesday announced an exciting addition to the 2011 promotional schedule: Jack Morris for an autograph signing on July 7th, a Thirsty Thursday.

Morris, who this year received 53.5% of the Hall of Fame vote (75% required for election) was a five-time all-star and four-time World Series Champion.

He’s perhaps best known for throwing 10 shutout innings to win Game 7 of the 1991 World Series 1-0 over the Braves. He won four games in that post-season alone. He also holds the record for consecutive Opening Day starts with 14.

Morris will sign autographs for BlueClaws fans at the July 7th game, which begins at 7:05.

Previous players to sign autographs at BlueClaws games include Hall of Famers Steve Carlton, Andre Dawson, Goose Gossage, Bob Feller, and Jim Rice, as well as Darryl Strawberry, Mitch Williams, and more.
